✅ In this guide you'll discover:
- Practical tips to make getting ready for your baby's first swim lesson stress-free, from packing to dressing your little one.
- How to keep your baby warm, dry, and comfortable after swimming, plus handy accessories like waterproof changing mats and wet bags.
- Expert advice to help you and your baby feel relaxed, confident, and ready to enjoy the pool together.
1. Before the Lesson:
Small Feed Before Traveling: We recommend feeding babies about an hour before the lesson, just a light snack. With toddlers, aim to leave an hour between mealtime and the lesson.
Leave Home Early: Prepare your bag in advance so you only need to double-check the contents before leaving. Allow plenty of time to drive, park, or navigate public transportation. We suggest arriving 10 minutes before your class to settle in and help your baby get used to the new environment.
Layer Up: Dress your baby in easy-to-remove layers. A onesie over a swim diaper can be quickly removed before and after your lesson. Waterproof onesies are water-repellent, cozy, and lined with super-soft fleece to keep your little one warm. They also work as puddle suits for rainy days.
Dress yourself comfortably, with easy-on clothing like comfy pants and a sweater, or a loose dress and slip-on shoes to simplify post-swim changes. Toweling gowns are handy if you want extra warmth.
Use a Waterproof Changing Mat: Place a waterproof changing mat on the bench or floor to create a clean space for changing. This helps keep your baby comfortable and dry until they enter the pool. Bring a spare swim nappy or liners just in case. Mats are flexible, easy to fold, and slip-resistant.
2. After the Lesson:
Wrap Your Baby in a Towel: As soon as you exit the pool, wrap your baby in a towel to keep them warm and cozy. Remove swimwear quickly and cover your baby with another towel until they are dry and warm. A wet bag is helpful for storing wet diapers and swimwear.
Dry and Change Promptly: You may choose to shower at home instead of using busy changing rooms. Wrap your baby in a dry hooded towel while you get dressed, then change them into a clean nappy and warm clothes.
Time for a Post-Swim Snack: Swimming is great exercise for babies, so a quick snack can keep them happy while you finish getting dressed.
Have a Dummy or Toy Ready: Bring a favorite toy or comforter to soothe your baby on the way home.
3. Additional Tips for a Great First Experience
Stay Relaxed: Babies can pick up on your emotions, so try to remain calm and positive. A relaxed attitude helps your baby feel safe and happy in the water. Stay patient after the lesson to reinforce positive associations with the pool routine.
Follow Your Instructor's Lead: Instructors are experienced in guiding babies and caregivers through their first lesson. Don't hesitate to ask questions, they're there to help.
Enjoy the Moment: Your baby’s first swim lesson is special. Take a deep breath, enjoy the bonding time, and watch your child explore the water.
At Water Babies, we aim to make your baby’s swimming journey joyful and stress-free. Following these tips will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable first lesson experience.
Happy swimming!
